Abstract

study examines a short-term, faculty-led study abroad programme designed to enhance experiential learning in Korean language and culture education. The case study presents the design, implementation, and outcomes of a model integrating Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), and Community-Based Language Learning (CBLL) to foster global citizenship through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Offered as a credit-bearing extension of Introduction to Korean Language and Culture at Wellesley College, the programme combined classroom instruction with student-centred exploration in Seoul, South Korea. It was organised around three pedagogical goals: content-rich learning, community-engaged learning, and global collaboration, all integrated through experiential learning. Throughout the spring semester, students prepared through a seminar and sustained virtual exchange with Yonsei University peers, developing collaborative research projects organised around the SDGs. The nine-day field trip allowed students to experience their research themes through visits to cultural sites, multicultural organisations in Ansan, the Haja Center alternative school, and the technology company Naver. The programme culminated in a joint workshop at Yonsei University, where Wellesley and Yonsei students presented their projects. This paper demonstrates how intentionally designed short-term study abroad can move beyond touristic site visits toward substantive global citizenship education.
