Abstract

This study introduces AI-integrated coursework designed to guide students in using AI responsibly for their assignments prior to receiving the final feedback from the teacher. The AI-integrated coursework was implemented throughout the 2024-25 academic year and was designed to support iterative learning through multiple stages, including receiving diagnostic feedback from an AI tool, identifying and analysing errors, and consolidating learning through an extended task. This process reflects key principles of formative assessment, particularly the role of feedback in fostering learner reflection and critical engagement with feedback sources. Findings from student surveys and interviews indicate that learners perceived AI tools as useful for providing immediate feedback, despite certain limitations. The results also suggest that the effectiveness of AI-generated feedback is closely linked to the quality of prompts, highlighting the importance of developing learners’ prompt literacy. These findings point to the need for further pedagogical attention to prompt design and for continued research into the role of AI-mediated feedback in second language learning contexts.
